Serving Our Community
What a great way to enter 2019—together with our community and neighbours! In the following video, Guest of honour, Prof Fatimah Lateef, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC, and religious leaders at the party shared why the Geylang Serai Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC) Countdown to 2019 was so special.
As a church, we believe in building bridges and not walls. We have partnered with members of the Geylang Serai IRCC to serve the community, build strong ties with other races and religions, and strengthen harmony in multi-racial and multi-religious Singapore.
At Work in Our Community
Our Board of Directors Secretary, Mr. Jacob Tan, was appointed to be the Secretary of the IRCC for 2017/2018. This year’s appointment ceremony was held during Iftar, recognising the rich traditions of the Malay and Muslim community.
Together with IRCC, we set up a booth at the Geylang Serai Mid-Autumn Town Night Carnival to raise awareness of the need for racial and religious harmony and to promote the community spirit in Geylang Serai.
Our inter-faith blood donation drive jointly organised by Masjid Khalid and HOGC, graced by Member of Parliament Fatimah Lateef, was featured on Berita Harian and Suria. Our youngest donor was 16 years old, and was quoted in the National Malay newspaper, “Kita semua mengongsi darah merah yang sama” (we all have the same colour of blood, red) — regardless of race or religion, we all bleed red.
We participated in Chingay under the WeCare Singapore Contingent, which saw a record number of 500 partners and 1000 grassroots leaders. The contingent reflected a diverse community coming together to build a stronger Singapore.
Red is the colour of harmony–under our different skin colour, we all bleed the same red. Together with Khalid Mosque and Geylang United Temple, we partnered with Red Cross for a joint blood donation drive held at our church. Over 200 participants from various races and religions donated blood, which will help over 450 patients.
For 4 months, our volunteers mentored Primary 5 students from Changkat Primary, helping them in their studies and showing them what it means to give back to society.
Together with the MP of Marine Parade GRC, Prof. Fatimah Lateef, we participated in Mid-Autumn celebrations with clans of various dialects in our community.
We participated in the 2017 light up ceremony themed “Deepening the Kampong Spirit” to commemorate Ramadan with the Muslim community. This event also allowed both locals and tourists to appreciate the Malay culture in Singapore.
Iftar is a significant event for Muslims as they break fast during the month of Ramadan. We partnered with Khalid Mosque and the IRCC to distribute food to the community in Geylang Serai.
Heart of God Church was mentioned in our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Instagram post for the work we have been doing in the community:
"I am not afraid of failure. I am afraid of succeeding at things that don't matter."
- William Carey
Success & Significance
In 1885, the "Cambridge Seven" stunned the world. These sons of power and privilege chose the alternative life and became missionaries to China.
One of these was C.T. Studd, a brilliant young man and a household name in cricket within the British Empire. He wrote: "Only one life 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last."
Heart of God Church Young Adults are alternativists, a word coined by Pastor How which combines alternative + activists. We want to show the world that an alternative exists to the typical Singaporean life. In God, we can have both success and significance.
